I hope you are having a good summer so far. Plenty of opportunities for picnics and get-togethers.
Often, I find that there are bowls of nuts set out at gatherings. Sometimes they pass out nuts on airplanes and you can buy bags of them in airports. Easy, healthy snack to carry, right?
When you are at home, do you often snack on some nuts just to tide you over until lunch or dinner?
But you are frustrated that you can’t seem to lose weight, even though you are eating healthy, whole foods?
This happened to me without me even really realizing it. It had become such a habit to grab some nuts, walnuts in my case, as I walked through the kitchen that I barely noticed that I had eaten them.
Eating them had become a habit – one that I did not really need. I am normally very careful about what I eat, but I had put on some pounds and I COULD NOT figure out why.
So, this year, for Lent, I decided to give up nuts. As a spiritual discipline.
Whoa, what an eye-opening experience that was! I had No idea how many times I reached for nuts when I was bored, frustrated, or sad during the day and night. Or sometimes just because they were there!
Does that sound like you?
Thinking that nus are healthy, right?
Have you been frustrated with trying to lose weight, eating according to plan, and not losing?
During the 6 weeks of Lent, I lost 4 pounds! By not eating nuts (and not making cookies for the youth group at church.)
I know, these little guys are delicious. They have certain good-for-you fats. And so fun to munch on….
The problem is that they are very dense in calories and could be the only reason you aren’t losing weight…
Are they good for you?
Yes and no.
They are a great source of whole food fat. They are nutrient dense. They do not cause a blood sugar spike.
But they are often roasted in unhealthy oils with lots of salt and sometimes sugar..
Nuts also contain compounds called phytates, which can interfere with the absorption of certain minerals. Additionally, their high fiber content may cause bloating or digestive discomfort for some people.
And if you are snacking on them – like when you aren’t really hungry but want something to much on, they are an unnecessary food.
With calories that easily add up to way more than your body needs. And you won’t even realize it.
You could easily eat more that 500+ calories, just like that.
If you are someone who snacks on nuts more than once a day, like I was doing, just imagine the calories you are taking in..
When I work with clients, we don’t count calories. But that’s a lot a whole food fat to take in in day.
So I suggest that they try not snacking on nuts for two weeks and see what happens. The weight comes off.
If this sounds like you, give it a try.
You’ve got nothing to lose! Well, except for the weight 😉.
