Are you gentle with your body?

Are You Gentle With Your Body?

When I ask the question, “Are you gentle with your body?” what’s the first answer that comes to mind?

For most of us, the honest answer is no.

We tend to be hard on our bodies—both in the way we treat them and even in how we think about them.

We push.  We criticize.  We don’t listen to it.

Let’s pause and ask:

  • Do you push yourself all day to the point of exhaustion, then try to squeeze in a workout past your limits?

  • Do you push until you crash, then reach for sugar, caffeine, or processed foods to “keep going”?

  • When your body aches, do you ignore it instead of resting?

  • When you look in the mirror, do you criticize your reflection—pinching, pulling, or mentally tearing yourself down?

If you answered yes to any of these, you’re not alone. But maybe it’s time to consider a new way.

My Own Story

I’ll be honest—I’ve done all of these things.

Living with chronic fatigue has taught me a lot about limits, but there have been times I ignored my body’s messages and exercised anyway—because I thought I should. The next day, I’d be in full recovery mode.

I’ve pushed through hip and thigh pain instead of resting. And back in college? I even exercised in the Florida heat in a plastic suit to sweat off pounds.

I’ve pushed myself to exhaustion, then “rewarded” my tired body with ice cream because I thought I needed an energy boost.

And yes—I’ve stood in front of a mirror, grabbing the parts of my body I didn’t like, wishing I could make them disappear. That’s extreme, and it wasn’t healthy.

Learning a Better Way

The good news? Over the years, I’ve learned to be gentler with my body. And you can, too.

One of the most powerful places I’ve found inspiration is Scripture—especially Galatians 5:22–23:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.”

Have you ever thought about applying the fruit of the Spirit to the way you treat your body?

How to Be Gentle With Your Body

Here are some ways to start:

  • Pray for guidance. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal areas where you can be gentler with your body.

  • Remember God. Psalm 139:14 says you are “fearfully and wonderfully made.” Treating your body with gentleness honors God’s creation.

  • Listen to your body. Rest when you’re tired. Pushing beyond your limits often backfires.

  • Shift how you see yourself. Stop criticizing the parts you don’t like. Start praising your body for all the amazing things it does for you.

  • Fuel your body wisely. Choose foods that give you energy and support your health, rather than depleting it.

Even implementing just one of these this week can begin to change the way you relate to your body.
