What to Wear on Date Night

OK- you have a special date coming up and you need something to wear for date night.  You or your husband have been busy with work, travel, kids, grandkids, you name it.  Or you are single and have finally met someone you are going to meet for a dinner or movie date.

What the heck is going to catch his eye and maybe say to himself, “Wow!  She looks great!”  And you say to yourself, “I look fantastic!”

In my mind, it’s a pretty simple formula – you are going to wear something that makes you feel pretty and maybe a little sassy and classy?  You are going to break the mold on what you normally wear.  It doesn’t matter how you feel about your body now.  You are going to be a little bold and take that chance.  I promise it will make you feel great and ultimately, that’s what’s important, right??

Let’s say your significant other is used to seeing you in jeans, shorts, or workout wear.  Why not surprise him by wearing a dress or skirt?  I can hear the howling right now – “My legs look awful, I’ll be so uncomfortable, it’s been years since I have worn a dress!”  So what?  Do it anyway.  Wearing a dress and showing your legs alone will make him take notice.  If your legs are pasty white, use a quick self-tanner like Tan Towels.  It will make you legs look slimmer.  I am not against a pair of very sheer hose or opaque hose.  Use a smoother or shape wear if that makes the dress look better.

Snazz it up with a pretty necklace, earrings and cure shoes and you are cooking!

Here is an example of a couple of pretty dresses that could work  (all these from Dillard’s online).  I know that when I wear a skirt on a movie date, my husband loves it.

Ok, if you absolutely refuse to put on a skirt or dress (I get it), use this simple formula for putting together a pants outfit.  If you are fuller on top, find a colorful solid top that is a little longer in a tunic length works.  It does not make it too wide and flowy.  That will make you look bigger.  Keep it close to the body (it skims your curves).

Then pair it with some slim or straight (not skinny!) print pants in a smallish print.  Remember if the top is looser and longer, pair it with slim pants.  However, have you tried a boot cut?  Sometimes that evens out top with bottom.  The key is to try them on with the top.

If you insist on wearing jeans, and I am OK with that, too, please no rips or tears in them.  No, no, no!  I don’t care if you are in your 30’s, they look tacky.  And especially if you are over 40…  Again if you are fuller on top, some light or colorful jeans could look great.

Now are fuller at the butt and hips, wear a pretty, colorful solid or print top.  You want the attention around your face. Pair that with some black pants or dark jeans with straight or wider leg.  In your jeans, forget embellishments, whiskering, and bleaching.  The goal is to look classy, not tacky.  Don’t forget some pretty accessories to draw the eye up.

And lastly, and most importantly, find the right colors for your skin and hair type.  To find your colors, the best book I have ever found is “Color Me Beautiful” by Carole Jackson.  You will never be sorry about investing in this little gem of a book.  Buy the paperback version, so you can really see the colors.

If you insist on wearing black, put your best colors up around your face with a cardigan, jacket, scarf, something to compliment your beautiful face, eyes, and smile..

That’s it.  My easy formula on how to dress for a perfect date night.
