What’s draining your energy (and how to get it back)

”I’m so tired.”

40 years ago I said it.  I was diagnosed with Chronic Epstein Barr Syndrome.  A lifelong case of mononeucleosis.

Add on to that I was a single parent working full time.

I took naps on my lunch hour.  I still take naps.  But I was tired.

Fast forward to 2017.

Not only was I tired, I was carrying around an extra 20 pounds, helping with twin grandchildren, working part-time and helping clients in my coaching business.  I was in my 60’s.  Turns out I was prediabetic and my body was just storing fat and stealing energy.

I can’t tell you the number of times I’ve heard my clients say, “I’m so tired.”

Maybe you say it to yourself every day.

Do you feel like you wake up tired… and stay tired all day?

You’re not lazy. You’re not broken. And you’re definitely not alone.

So many women over 50 feel like they’re running on empty—mentally, emotionally, and physically.
And the frustrating part? You’re doing so much for everyone else. But your body, brain, and spirit are quietly waving a white flag.

Let’s talk about what might be draining your energy—and how to start refueling it.

1. Blood Sugar Swings
Unstable blood sugar can make you feel exhausted, foggy, and moody. You eat for energy… but then crash two hours later.
I was having those swings and cravings.  I didn’t know my blood sugar and body were in SOS mode.

🟡 Quick Fix: Start your day with a protein-rich breakfast. Think eggs, chia pudding, a smoothie with protein powder, collagen and greens. You can include some berries that are low glycemic. Have some of last night’s leftovers with protein. Avoid skipping meals and watch those quick carbs.

2. Inflammation and Poor Sleep
Night sweats, joint pain, or waking up at 3 a.m.? As hormones shift, inflammation and disrupted sleep are real energy thieves.

🟡 Quick Fix: Reduce processed foods and sugar, drink more water, and aim for 7–8 hours of quality sleep. Add a calming bedtime routine with prayer, journaling, mint tea, or magnesium (this can include an Epsom salt bath.)  See your practitioner to get some tests run.  Follow-through on any recommendations.  I lost the weight when I lowered my insulin and blood sugar.  I felt better when when my hormones got balanced.

3. Mental Overload
Your brain is juggling everything—family, health challenges, aging parents, grandchildren and work. Constant mental noise is exhausting.

🟡 Quick Fix: Start the day with 5–10 minutes of quiet. No checking your phone. Just you and God. Even one verse or a short breath prayer can ground your spirit and ease the mental fog.  Taking this a little further, take little breaks during the day to just breathe, take a walk outside, have a glass of your favorite beverage.  Pushing yourself will not restore your energy – it will simply deplete you.

4. Spiritual Disconnection
Sometimes, the tiredness isn’t just physical—it’s soul-deep. You may be spiritually hungry without realizing it.

🟡 Quick Fix: Ask God today: “Where am I running on empty?” Then invite Him to fill that place. Energy flows differently when your heart feels anchored in Him.  Try writing a letter to Jesus and share your heart with Him – what’s going on? Then wait a bit for his reply.  Write your thoughts and impressions down.  Where can you connect with others to share your thoughts and challenges?

💬 Reflect:
Where are you most depleted—body, mind, or spirit?

You were never meant to run this race in your own strength. God wants to partner with you in renewing your energy—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

📖 Scripture:
“But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength.
They will soar on wings like eagles;
they will run and not grow weary,
they will walk and not be faint.”

— Isaiah 40:31 (NIV)

You are not too tired to change.
You’re just ready to be restored.
