You’re Doctor May Be Wrong About Your Glucose

I hate say this, but…your doctor may be wrong.

Because I care about you, I want to give you a heads up about something that may be making you feel falsely safe about your blood sugar lab results.

This happened to me, and I don’t want it to happen to you. Your health is at stake here.

Nothing against your doc or any docs who mistakenly assure their patients that all is well with their patient’s blood sugar. They are simply going by the mainstream guidelines that many physicians use and have used for many years.

Here is the truth: Your fasting blood sugar or glucose may be below 100 (the existing guideline) and you may already be insulin resistant or prediabetic. That number may be the last indication that you have a blood sugar problem.

Here is what happened to me: I observed over several years that my fasting blood sugar or glucose was gradually creeping up to 90 and above. Yet my internist kept assuring me that all was well. I was gaining weight, especially around my middle. I was eating a mainly healthy diet but was enjoying my sweet treats occasionally and was eating 6 small meals a day, as the doctors had recommended years ago.

Then, I was speaking with a client, and she told me she had been diagnosed with prediabetes. It made me start to wonder if perhaps I may be as well, give my blood sugar numbers and weight gain. There is a family history of Type 1, Type 2 and prediabetes in my family. I found out from my client that she had had a Hemoglobin A1C test done and that is how she found out she was prediabetic.

I asked my doctor about having this test done, and she resisted, saying my fasting blood sugar was under 100. I insisted and she finally consented when I mentioned I had close family relatives with diabetes. The result: I was well into the prediabetic range, even though my blood sugar (glucose) was under 100.

So, I am sad to say that your doctor or practitioner may be wrong.

Here is my advice: If you have gained weight, especially around your middle, if your fasting number has been moving up, if you have family members who are prediabetic or diabetic, if you just feel like there is something off – you just don’t feel good, and you have other troublesome health markers, ask your doctor or practitioner for these lab tests: fasting glucose, fasting insulin and Hemoglobin A1C. These are the ones my functional medicine practitioner recommends.

If you don’t mind testing yourself, you can get an A1C test online or at the drugstore.

If it turns out you are prediabetic or even diabetic, don’t despair. You can reverse these numbers and get in the normal range again! You can regain your health and energy.

I did it and you can, too.
