Finding the Perfect in the “Not So Perfect” Part II

AZ 5I wrote a post like this post at the end of last summer and I think it is time for Part II.  You can read Part I here.

“How was your summer?  Did you take any trips?”

As the summer winds down and the kids go back to school, I have found that people keep asking  how my summer and vacation went. When I think back over the summer, some of the first things that come to mind are the things that were not so perfect – in fact, a bit of a disappointment.  This is how my wah-wah list goes:

  • It was miserably hot and humid – it is Florida, after all…
  • The pool has been 92 degrees – more like a warm bath than a refreshing dip.  Not want to get in.
  • I hurt my elbow somehow (“tennis elbow”) in my left elbow?  PT followed.
  • I hurt my neck – took weeks to calm down.
  • I hurt my back making the bed (go figure!)  Do I detect a “poor pitiful me” pattern here?
  • My grandson having meltdowns twice in two days in restaurants.
  • We took the grandkids to AZ and ended up getting stuck in Phoenix two extra days because of airline glitches and it was 111 degrees.

That’s pretty sad, right?  Why couldn’t I remember all the great things that happened during the summer?  I think too often we remember the negative and forget to be grateful for the positive.  I can certainly change my thoughts to what was fabulous about the summer.  What were my “most grateful” moments of the summer?

  • The trip to AZ with the grandkids was the highlight.  So much fun spending time with my step-mother and their great grandmother in a real log cabin in the AZ mountains.
  • Low 60’s at night with the windows open there.  Unheard of in Florida in the summer.
  • A fun trip to the NC mountains to visit my friend Lynn Broadway.  Again 60’s at night.  Love it.
  • Hiking with her on a portion of the Appalachian Trail in NC.
  • Seeing a bear in her backyard!
  • Eating at an all-gluten-free restaurant in Asheville (The Posano) and even getting dessert!
  • Picking up my husband and step-son in the GA mountains after their week-long adventure hike on the Appalachian Trail.
  • Having my grandkids for part of the summer.  Watching movies and swimming.  Fun!

There you have it.  So much nicer remembering the “most grateful” moments of the summer.  Some parts were not-so-perfect.  But so what?  That’s life!  If you can change your thoughts, you can change your whole way of being.

Now, what were your “not so perfect” moments of the summer and how can you turn that around into your “most grateful” moments?  Leave me a comment and let me know how it turns out.
