What Am I Going To Do Now?

What am I going to do now?

As I walked out of the state Department of Health building, I had lots of emotions going on:  excitement, relief, sadness, and anxiety.

I felt that God was calling me to a different season and a different purpose, so I took early retirement from my job of 22 years.

My thought after I got home and had spent a little while just enjoying not getting up early every day was: What am I going to do now?

The opportunities were endless.  I could volunteer at a hospital or with an organization. I could go back to school and get my Master’s degree.  I could start a new hobby.

But God had a different plan (as He often does.)

Two months after I retired, I found out my daughter was going to have twins!  Well, that was a bit unexpected, but what a joyous thing to celebrate and enjoy.  So, I got to go through that whole journey with her, which eventually turned into a high-risk pregnancy.  I could go to doctor’s appointments with her and help get her ready to bring home two babies.

I got to help take care of the babies after they were born.  I wouldn’t trade that time for anything.

After about a year, I was ready to start something new.  I did volunteer at a hospital and start my Master’s degree. I also tried going to school to become a medical assistant.  None of those activities really inspired me.  But it was good to explore different things to do.

Then, a friend told me about a project at the FSU College of Medicine that trains and supports African-American caregivers of loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia.  It was faith-based. I could use my health care administration experience.  It was the perfect part-time job for me!  I applied and was hired.  I have worked there for 12 years and they have been some of the most rewarding years of my life.

During that time period, I also started volunteering at a therapeutic riding stable.  My grandson, who is on the autism spectrum, was riding there.  It combined my love of horses and being able to help kids.

Also, during that time, I started my own business as a style consultant and then got certified as a life coach. I’m still a life coach for Christian women who feel stalled out and just can’t get it going in some are of their lives – relationships, health and career. It is a joy and honor to help women in mid-life turn their health around, enrich their relationships, move on after divorce, get ready for love, figure out retirement, and make a career change.

With faith-filled encouragement, if that is desired.

I tell this story, so that you can feel encouraged that it is never too late to reinvent yourself!  I was 55 when I retired from the Department of Health.

I remarried at age 52.

I reversed my prediabetes.

The possibilities are endless.

All you have to do is dream a little.
