What To Say When You Are Tempted To Eat Something You Know Will Not Serve You

You are at home, after dinner, and you are tempted to have a bowl of ice cream.  Or some cookies.  You know it will not serve you in your weight loss efforts and moving towards better health.

You are bored or tired at the office and you are tempted to go to the snack machine and get a candy bar or reach into your desk drawer to snack on your emergency supply of M & Ms.

What can you do to stop yourself from indulging in foods you know will not serve you?

I’d like to offer that one little question is all you need.

What would feel like love right now?

How could that possibly help, you say?

Because when you choose love, over time you will make different choices, lose the weight and be able to keep it off.  Your body and spirit will benefit, I promise.

I am borrowing this great suggestion from two of my mentor master coaches, Brooke Castillo from the Life Coach School and Susan Hyatt, from her book, BARE.

This may sound odd and you may be skeptical as I was, and as Susan was, at first.  What kind of weight loss strategy is that?  You mean I don’t have to restrict and try willpower?  Not white knuckle it in the moment?

Try it.  The next time you are tempted or even just considering making a choice, and it doesn’t have to be just food (could be drink, shopping, whatever is,) ask yourself.  What would feel like love right now?  An apple or a candy bar?  Ice cream or having a nice cup of flavored herbal tea?  Which is going to serve you better in the long term – to help you reach and stay at your goal weight?  Choose love, as often as you can.

Now I am going to refer back to the fruits of the Spirit scriptures as a foundation for taking care of your body, which I posted recently here and here.

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.”  Gal. 5:22-23

#1 is Love!

So, ask yourself, “What would feel like love, for breakfast, after dinner, at home or at work when you are stressed?”

I’d love to hear how this works for you – it has worked for me in situations where I know it will not serve my body or spirit.

And if you would like to chat about your challenges with losing weight, avoiding food temptations, reaching a healthy weight for you, and possibly working together, shoot me an email at jane@janespringer.com.   I’ll get right back to you.

Much love,

Jane
